Big Brother Government

You would think congress would have better things to do than make laws dictating the volume on your TV commercials. What’s next a law to make the picture on your TV the same brightness and sharpness.

From the AP -http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100930/ap_on_en_tv/us_congress_loud_commercials_1

The Senate late Wednesday unanimously passed a bill to require television stations and cable companies to implement industry standards capping the volume of commercials and equalizing the volume between ads and other programming.

If you ask me, enforcing these laws was a public safety issue. The volume of commercials were getting so loud you could go deaf! I'm normally against government involvement, but if we're paying for cable, we shouldn't have to put up with any advertising at all. For those of you who are too young to know, when cable first came out, no commercial advertising was the premise under which they took power. They lied to us. They should be drawn and quartered for it!

As annoying as loud commercials are, you the individual has the ability to call the cable company or advertiser and complain or choose not to watch networks that allow loud commercials. Having government intervene on your behalf and allowing them to decide what is best for us is nothing more than the slow erosion of liberty and personal responsibility.  The simple freedom of choosing to do something about the loudness of a commercial now belongs to the government and they will now dictated what a commercial sounds like today and tomorrow they may be telling us what the content of a commercial will need to be, to be a “Public” commercial.  20 years ago you would have thought it ludicrous for a city government to outlaw happy meals because the toy inside was enticing and causing the kids to become overweight...when poor parenting is the real cause of the problem.
